Review:
Even before he announced his retirement for a quiet life as the pastor of his own ministry, Mason "Mase" Bertha's slow-going flow was always a soothing point in the rap game. The five years away from the mike have left him refreshed and recharged and ready to serve up more mainstream hip-hop. Sure, a couple of the hokey lyrics--like "Livin la vida without the loca" from lead single "Welcome Back" slightly taint the return. But pulling tricks like sampling the Welcome Back, Kotter theme for the same song's intro is pure genius. Mase then struts his easygoing style on the Latin-flavored tribute to his home spot "May Harlem Lullaby," throws a club-ready party with old pal P. Diddy in "Breathe" and does his best to one-up Usher with "The Love You Need." Welcome back, indeed.
